Upon understanding the design brief to retain the original HDB carcass that was in relatively good condition, we decided that the Utilitarian approach will be most suited for this project. The essence of this approach is to maximise the use of available materials or resources to create practical day to day uses of living spaces. We use common commercial application to paint over existing flooring, as a sustainable yet cost-effective method of preserving materials. By muting the space with a common color, it expands the space visually by giving it a seamless and whole look.

As quoted by Peter Zumthor “A good building must be capable of absorbing the traces of human life and taking on a specific richness…”

The materiality of the flooring will eventually wear, revealing the anthropology of the space. It is a poetic exploration of leaving traces and allowing materials to age gracefully.
